Torkington
Torkington is a settlement in the Stockport district, in the county of Greater Manchester, England.
History
Torkington was formerly a township in the parish of Stockport, in 1866 Torkington became a separate civil parish. In 1875 Torkington was one of eight parishes of Cheshire to be included in the Stockport rural sanitary district. The sanitary district became the Stockport Rural District in 1894.
The parish was abolished on 30 September 1900 to form Hazel Grove and Bramhall civil parish and urban district. In 1891 the parish had a population of 294. Hazel Grove and Bramhall was abolished in 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, and its former area was transferred to Greater Manchester to be combined with that of other districts to form the present-day Metropolitan Borough of Stockport.
