Project scope
What topics we cover
WikiProject Anime and manga's scope includes all topics related to anime and manga as well as all media, persons, organizations and fandom substantially related to any anime and manga franchise. This includes international subjects necessary for comprehensive coverage of the core topics.
- Anime, including television, OVAs, and animated films;
- Manga and light novels, including serials, such as Young King OURs, and collected volumes;
- Media belonging to the same franchises as the above, including video games, visual novels, live action versions, audio dramas, soundtracks, and stage shows and musicals (such as Musical: The Prince of Tennis);
- Video games related to anime or manga are under a shared scope with WikiProject Video games;
- Visual novels, dating sims, bishojo games and other similar games regardless of whether they have a major anime or manga adaptation under a shared scope with the visual novels task force;
- Notable characters, episodes, issues, and merchandise of the above media;
- Directors (e.g. Hayao Miyazaki) and mangaka (such as Rumiko Takahashi) and other notable production staff;
- Japanese publishers and production studios (e.g., Shōnen Gahōsha and Gainax) and international distributors (such as A.D. Vision and Funimation);
- Notable Japanese or international publications and websites meant for review and commentary of anime or manga (such as Newtype or Anime News Network);
- Voice actors, Japanese or international, whose principal work is in anime and whose roles are generally notable (such as Takehito Koyasu or Jessica Calvello); and
- Drama CDs, songs and soundtracks based on anime or manga are under either the shared scope of WikiProject Albums or WikiProject Discographies depending upon the nature of the article.
- Composers, bands and musicians based primarily around anime or manga are under either the shared scopes of WikiProject Composers or WikiProject Musicians.
- Major aspects of fandom: including conventions (e.g., Comiket or Otakon), terminology and concepts such as otaku, and other practices.
What topics we do not cover
This project maintains an essential focus on anime, manga, and related merchandise originally meant for consumption in Japan. Therefore, its scope does not include works with incidental or minor association, including (but not limited to):
- Animated or printed works produced for consumption outside of Japan that nevertheless draw on or are similar to Japanese media in terms of content or form (such as Chinese animation, Korean animation, manhwa, manhua and Western manga-styled comics such as Gothic Sports and Peach Fuzz).
- Media, particularly video games, in which anime or manga characters make incidental or out-of-context appearances.
- Pre-modern manga such as Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga, their artists, and other related elements. These are better suited for inclusion with the Japan and Art WikiProjects.
- Composers, bands and musicians with incidental anime or manga association, such as having only a few of their songs used for anime opening or ending theme songs.
- Articles on compilation albums with only a few anime or manga related tracks.
Goals
As a WikiProject, our main goals are to:
- Ensure that all anime and manga-related articles are clean, organized, well-written, and accessible;
- improve all anime and manga-related articles to at least good article, featured article, and/or featured list status; and
- create new articles relating to anime and manga as long as they are encyclopedic and adhere to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
