44th Mechanized Brigade (Ukraine)

The 44th Separate Mechanized Brigade (Ukrainian: 44 окрема механізована бригада) is a brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces formed in 2023.

History

The brigade was formed on 2 March 2023. It was one of the Ukrainian brigades trained in Poland. The brigade has been assigned the military number A4723, and at least one battalion is equipped with Polish-donated BMP-1s. It is also receiving the German-made Leopard 1A5.

The brigade entered its first combat mission in the Bakhmut area, where on 9 August 2023, the commander of the 3rd Battalion, Major Oleksij Šedul'ko, was killed. In September it was transferred north, together with the 42nd Mechanized Brigade to reinforce Ukrainian defenses in the Kupiansk region. During 2024 it continues to fight on the front in Luhansk.
