According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 23.54 square miles (61.0 km), of which 23.03 square miles (59.6 km) (or 97.83%) is land and 0.51 square miles (1.3 km) (or 2.17%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 51,898 people and 20,618 households residing in the township. The population density was 2,262/mi. The racial makeup of the township was 86.8% White, 9.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.0% Asian, less than 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. 1.2% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.96. The median age was 31.6 years. For every 100 females, there were 89 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $26,705, and the median income for a family was $35,135. The per capita income for the township was $14,540. 20.6% of the population and 16.4% of families were below the poverty line.
