Maçka (Trabzon Province)

Maçka (Greek: Ματζούκα, romanizedMatzoúka, the "club"; Laz: მაჩხა Maçxa) is a municipality and district of Trabzon Province, Turkey. Its area is 925 km, and its population is 24,709 (2022). The name derives from the medieval Greek Matzouka, which was one of the provinces of the Empire of Trebizond. In Ottoman times, the area formed the nahiye of Maçuka. The Greek Orthodox Sumela Monastery is located in the district.
